The Ladies of Charity were founded by St. Vincent DePaul 400 years ago in 1617 at Chatillon-les-Dombes, in the diocese of Lyons in eastern France. There are now 250,000 Ladies of Charity serving those who are less fortunate in 52 countries around the world.  It is their goal to serve with humility, simplicity, and charity.

In the United States, 8,000 Ladies serve in 68 associations in 21 states and the District of Columbia.

The Ladies of Charity in the United States was founded here at St. Vincent’s in 1857 when Catherine Harkins was directed to continue the work of Saint Vincent and Saint Louise as a Lady of Charity. In 1960 a national organization was established to offer consistent formation to all associations and to strengthen the bonds of charity.

We, here at St. Vincent’s, meet the first Sunday of the month – September-May – after 9:00 AM Mass in the annex.

Our dues are $25 which includes a subscription to the national publication, The Servicette. If you are interested in joining the Ladies of Charity, please contact one of the officers or call Kerry at the office and she will direct you to one of them.

Our goal is” to serve rather than to be served”.  We contribute to all of the outreach ministries here at St. Vincent’s as funds are available.  We hold a rummage sale the first Saturday of each month to raise money for the parish, to support our mission and to serve the community. We help with Senior Bingo every Thursday during the winter months. We staff a clothing window for the homeless every Tuesday from 12:00-1:30 PM providing personal needs and clothing as available. We assist at the Meals Program. We support an orphanage in Haiti, Let’s Start, Cabrini Academy, Hosea House’s” Back- to- School” Program, the food pantry, the Christmas Program and emergency utility assistance. Many of our Ladies serve outside of the parish with immigrants in language programs, rocking babies, in hospitals, visiting the sick, driving folks to doctor’s appointments, and so on. What makes our Ladies special is the fact that we share the mission.  We gather twice a year for spiritual renewal and we have a May Crowning and potluck supper each May. In the summer we have two activities just for fun!  These events keep us in touch with our friends during the summer. In September we sponsor a WALK to try to raise the visibility of our mission and recruit members as well as raise funds.  In October we have a card Party and in the spring, every other year, we have a fashion show featuring designer fashions that we have collected from our donations. The card party and fashion show are fund raisers and social events.  All of our events are open to the public.
