Reflection for the Week of 12/24/06:
"Soon, and Very Soon"

By Sr. Regina Siegfried, ACS

This blessed season, the shortest Advent possible, will be part of the spiral of the liturgical year very soon, as soon as a few hours from now. Some of us will wend our way back to this worship space maybe sooner than we would like. Advent is about preparing and waiting, not for a baby Jesus, but for the fullness of the reign of God. Each season of the liturgical cycle is intended to make the breadth and richness of God with us more real and realized.
The reading from the prophet Micah, that voice of justice that echoes down the years from the Old Testament, reminds us of the coming of the shepherd of the flock. Micah tells us, "He shall be peace." Peace, a desperately needed virtue in our war-torn globe, is God's gift to hearts hungering for inner harmony and stillness. The gospel story from Luke recounts Mary's visit to Elizabeth, the first woman to experience the coming of the shepherd of peace, freedom, and justice.
The Carmelite poet Jessica Powers' poem "The Visitation Journey" ends with this stanza:
"Love hurried forth to serve," I read, approvingly.
But also, see, with thoughts blown past her youth,
a girl riding upon a jolting donkey
and riding further and further into the truth.

Mary hastens to serve her cousin Elizabeth, to bring the good word of freedom, peace, and justice. This is the story of this too-short Advent-God comes to us very soon so that we may serve others in God's household. Did you notice when all the food decorated the altar that is was next to impossible to pick out the precise box of cereal that your family contributed? One of many made our service to the hungry of our neighborhood possible. The individual boxes, cans, bottles, jars, and bags weren't significant in themselves; it was the total that made the difference. Individuals serve in the name of the community of believers. This is the story we pass on to future generations; it's the story that was handed down to us.

Ponder:
*How have my family, my community, or I experienced the coming of Jesus this Advent?
*Is my heart ready for the coming of freedom, justice, and peace?
*How soon is soon?
Do:
*Take the little Advent time that is left to ponder they mystery of it all.
