21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

Finally, after four Sundays of listening to the “Bread of Life” discourse from John 6 (did you read the whole thing?), we reach the climax and conclusion. The first reading from the Book of Joshua sets the scene for us. Joshua gathers the tribes of Israel and challenges them to “decide today whom you will serve.” Joshua, his household, and the people opt to believe in and serve the God who protected them on their long trek, lost for forty years in a desert.

The drama continues in the Gospel. The disciples, gathered around Jesus, question what he means when he says he is the Bread of Life. “This saying is hard; who can accept it?”
